VA - Savvy Sugar ~ The Pure Essence Of West Coast Rock & Roll (2010)

2010 | Rockabilly, Rhythm & Blues, Rock'n'Roll | Mp3 320 kbps | 3 CD | 415 Mb

Savvy Sugar is designed as a natural successor to the thoroughly-recommended Fantastic Voyage compilation, “”Heavy Sugar”” (FVTD051). Whereas that 3xCD release was devoted to a panorama of R&B sides out of New Orleans, “”Savvy Sugar”” focuses on “”The Pure Essence of West Coast Rock & Roll””.
Los Angeles may well be synonymous with movie stars, the Capitol Tower and Sunset Boulevard, but it also ranks as a leading location on the road to rock ‘n’ roll. The music’s emergence in the 1950s brought about a profusion of area recording facilities, many of which were dotted around the city’s 498 square miles. These included Radio Recorders, United, Gold Star and Master Recorders, and the studio owners were quick to learn that it paid to be as diverse as possible. The day might start with a film dubbing, ahead of a television commercial being taped over the lunch hour. Then in the afternoon the microphones could be adjusted to record a big band, followed by a teenage pop session in the evening. What made the system totally unique was the fact that a clutch of skilled musicians from the Hollywood sound stages were also responsible for supplying the goods on the rock ‘n’ roll dates. Drummer Earl Palmer, guitarist René Hall, bassist Red Callender, and the sax and piano-playing brothers, Plas & Ray Johnson, were the guys in question, and their infinite adaptability was responsible for some of the most exciting rock ‘n’ roll recordings of all time. Having said that, many of the new breed-ers like Ricky Nelson, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and Tommy Sands chose to use their own players; a situation that effectively allowed the baton to be handed over in readiness for another era.
Compiled and annotated by Stuart Colman, “”Savvy Sugar” contains several hard-to-find items from this electrifying era, plus a miscellany of freshly-unearthed gems and a range of goodies that have been laying in wait for far too long. Bearing in mind the CD set’s all-important sub-title, “”The Pure Essence of West Coast Rock ‘n’ Roll””, “”Savvy Sugar”” could well turn out to be this season’s # 1 guilty pleasure.

Bob Seger - I Knew You When (Deluxe Edition) (2017)

2017 | Rock | FLAC | 380 Mb

Mortality is on Bob Seger's mind on I Knew You When, an album dedicated to his departed friend Glenn Frey. I Knew You When contains two tributes to Frey -- the sepia-toned title track and "Glenn Song," the latter available only on the album's deluxe edition -- but the onetime Eagle isn't the only dead rock star to haunt the album. Seger covers Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen, both selections -- "Busload of Faith" and "Democracy" -- nodding to the American mess of 2017, another element that adds a sense of immediacy to the record. Despite these undercurrents of sentiment and politics, I Knew You When can't quite be called a meditative, melancholy record, not with roughly half the record devoted to fist-pumping arena-fillers that feel piped in from several different eras. "Runaway Train" is confined by a robotic pulse that channels "Shakedown," "The Highway" is dressed with '80s synths, and "The Sea Inside" is a clumsy nod to Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir," sounds that not only fight with Seger's protests and tributes but fight with each other. These old-fashioned album rockers are so loud and awkward, they overshadow the excellent singer/songwriter album that lurks at the core of I Knew You When. Such imbalance makes I Knew You When a bit incoherent, yet in its quietest and angriest moments, it offers some of the best music Seger has made in the 21st century.

Tom T. Hall - Storyteller, Poet, Philosopher (1995)

1995 | Country, Singer-Songwriter | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 350 Mb

The double-disc box set Storyteller, Poet, Philosopher concentrates on Tom T. Hall's talents as a narrative songwriter, eschewing some of his better-known novelties for lesser-known, but better-written, serious songs. That doesn't mean the box is devoid of hits -- all of the important ones are here. What it does mean is that Storyteller, Poet, Philosopher is the first Tom T. Hall compilation to convey accurately the scope of his talents, as well as his achievements.

Hank Thompson - The Pathway Of My Life ~ 1966-1986 (2013)

2013 | Country | Mp3 320 kbps | 8 CD | 1,57 Gb

Early in his extensive liner notes for Bear Family's eight-disc box The Pathway of My Life: 1966-1986, Scott B. Bomar quotes something Hank Thompson told his biographer, Warren Kice: "I was never happy with those records and I never thought it was my thing. Nobody wanted to do my style of music and I never was able to get the records with Dot that I did with Capitol." Presumably, Thompson held the records he made for Warner Bros., ABC, and Churchill -- the other three labels he recorded for after leaving Capitol in 1964 -- in a similar low regard and, to an extent, his mild disdain is understandable. The Capitol records he made with his Brazos Valley Boys between 1947 and 1965 -- boxed up, along with his handful of sides for Globe and Blue Bonnet, in Bear Family's 12-disc 1996 box Hank Thompson & His Brazos Valley Boys -- were indeed the singer's popular and creative peak, monumental Western swing that rivaled Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. The 20 years of music collected on The Pathway of My Life sees Thompson constantly adjusting to the times, first by trimming his group, which reached 14 musicians at its peak, to a core five or six, then allowing producer Joe Allison to sweeten his Western swing with syrupy backing vocals -- a questionable idea made distasteful by the decision to have the singers mimic steel guitar lines. Allison added these sugary vocals with the intent of polishing Thompson up for the changing pop charts and it worked, with "On Tap in the Can or in the Bottle" and "Smoky the Bar" reaching the Top Ten in 1968. Beneath that gloss -- and it's possible to hear around these tacky accouterments, as the whittled-down band remains muscular and is sometimes accentuated by guitarist Merle Travis -- this music is hard Texas country and, once he parted ways with Allison and moved from Warner to ABC, the purity of his country could easily be heard. At times, he'd follow the shifting tides of fashion -- it's disarming to hear fuzz guitars on the Allison-era "But That's All Right" but natural to hear him sing "Behind Closed Doors" -- and sometimes he'd indulge in a bout of nostalgia (he recorded a nice tribute to the Mills Brothers in the early '70s, and it's fun to hear him reconnect to his big-band roots), but he generally stuck to his tried-and-true Texas country. His last Top Ten was called "The Older the Violin, the Sweeter the Music," a nod to his advancing age, and if the productions of the late '70s and early '80s do sound a little brittle and cheap, the same can't be said of Thompson himself: as this big box proves, he was a warm, robust, cheerful vocalist who made sweet music.
