Benny Joy - Crash The Party ~ The Story 1957-61 (2009)

Rockabilly, Rock'n'Roll | Mp3 320 kbps | 3 CD | 485 Mb

Benny Joy was one of the umpteen rockabilly acts who enjoyed some regional success in the 1950s but never broke though to nationwide recognition, only to be embraced by rockabilly collectors decades later. The Florida-based Joy (born Benny Eidson) cut a handful of solid rockers such as "Spin the Bottle" and "Button Nose" that are the stuff of legend among rockabilly fanatics, along with some fine moody numbers like "I'm Doubtful of Your Love," before leaving performing behind for a career as a Nashville songwriter, where he penned tunes for the likes of Marty Robbins, Mel Tillis, and Johnny Rivers. One of Joy's biggest supporters is Billy Miller, singer with the A-Bones and founder of Norton Records; the A-Bones released an entire album of Benny Joy material in 1996, and now Miller lets the man speak for himself on Crash the Party: The Benny Joy Story 1957-1961, an expansive three-CD set that collects Joy's rare single sides along with a treasure trove of alternate takes, home recordings, demo tapes, and unreleased material. While the titles suggest that Benny Joy's tunes were typical teen fare of the era, "Crash the Party," "Button Nose," "Rollin' to the Jukebox Rock," and "Miss Bobby Sox" are all tougher stuff than that, with lyrics that took the rites of teen passage seriously as Joy makes the most of his intense vocal style, reinforced by the hot guitar work of his sidekick Big John Taylor ("Button Nose" and "Hey High School Baby" sound almost lascivious all these years later). Joy also wrote or co-wrote all but eight of the 76 tracks on this set (Taylor composed the rest), and his skill with both melodies and lyrics is impressive, with this wealth of material sounding remarkably consistent in its effortless cool. Crash the Party has been sequenced for feel rather than historical chronology, so Joy's original singles are scattered among the outtakes' scratchy-sounding demo acetates and home-recorded tapes, so folks hoping for a concise picture of Joy's career will have to do some digging. But all three discs reveal their share of welcome surprises, and Joy's songs are strong enough that hearing them in a variety of different contexts never gets tiresome. If Crash the Party is almost more Benny Joy than most folks would want or need, the music (and Miller's fine liner notes) leaves no doubt that he clearly deserved the stardom that eluded him in his lifetime, and this is easily the definitive celebration of the man and his music; crank this up and let that jukebox rock!

VA - Rare Pop Instrumentals Of The Fifties (2015)

Instrumental, Pop, Rock | Mp3 320 kbps | 185 Mb

Once upon a time, it was a melody that truly sold a song, along with a clever way of bringing it across. This collection is devoted to that concept; Rare Pop Instrumentals of the Fifties, as the title suggests, gathers together 31 songs without vocals that for the most part enjoyed a run on the hit parade before rock & roll became the staple of the singles charts. Dominated by talented instrumentalists and pop orchestras, Rare Pop Instrumentals of the Fifties is full of jaunty tunes ("The Poor People of Paris"), charming novelty pieces ("The Typewriter"), themes from hit movies ("Main Title from 'The Man with the Golden Arm'"), evocative mood music ("Canadian Sunset"), period exotica ("Chinatown, My Chinatown"), and much more. Well sequenced and mastered with care, Rare Pop Instrumentals of the Fifties should please fans of pre-rock pop tunes and those who fondly remember mid-century melodies.

Lulu - Shout! ~ The Complete Decca Recordings 1964-67 (2009)

Pop, Rock | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 243 Mb

Although Lulu's mid-'60s Decca recordings have been issued piecemeal on numerous anthologies, somehow no one executed the logical idea of putting them all together on one release until this 42-track, two-CD collection. All of her 1964-1967 sides for the label are included, serving as a comprehensive document to the first three years or so of her recording career. Particularly in the U.S. (where she really wasn't known until the 1967 chart-topper "To Sir with Love," not included here), this period has remained rather obscure, and certainly not as familiar to the general rock fan as her more commercially successful recordings of the late '60s. This is a shame, as this was undoubtedly the era -- in spite of her tender teenage years -- in which she laid down her most soulful, R&B-influenced, and raunchiest recordings by far. The 1964 British hit cover of "Shout!" is of course the most famous of these. But those who dismiss Lulu as a relative lightweight of the British Invasion might be surprised to find quite a few other first-rate combinations of soul and girl group pop here, like "Nothing Left to Do But Cry," "I'll Come Running Over," "After You," "Take Me as I Am," "Can't Hear You No More," and a rip-roaring "Heatwave." The completist nature of this project does mean you get a good number of mediocre songs that wouldn't have made the cut for a more selective single-disc Decca-era best-of. Too, some of the rarer numbers (including both sides of a German-language 45 and numerous non-LP tracks) just aren't in the same league with the more familiar tunes. But with comprehensive liner notes, this is a necessary acquisition for Lulu fans, and a pretty good one for more general British Invasion admirers.

Ten Years After - The Anthology 1967-1971 (2002)

Pop, Rock, Blues | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 367 Mb

Since Ten Years After's albums weren't stand-alone classics, this double CD of their prime years is the best bet for those who like the band but don't want to sit through some pretty mediocre and monotonous stuff to get to the best bits. The 26 cuts are pretty well chosen, including naturally their most famed songs: "I'm Going Home" (the live Woodstock version), "I'd Love to Change the World," and the British hit "Love Like a Man." Even as it draws from the cream of their work, it can't quite make the argument for them as a major band, but it does show that they were a more versatile act than many would remember. There are some reasonable pop- and folk-rock-flavored songs from the pen of Alvin Lee; a fair amount of jazz influence from time to time, as on "Me and My Baby" and "Woman Trouble"; a song ("50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain") that borrows rather too liberally from the Rolling Stones, "Sympathy for My Devil"; and even a bit of Grateful Dead-like vocal harmony on "Hear Me Calling." There's still, of course, quite a bit of blues-rock, flash guitar, and boogie, which sound better when broken up by more subdued and varied cuts and also benefit from the wise decision not to include too many covers. It's also nice that the collection includes both sides of two 1968 singles, although those were released on LP in the early '70s as part of Alvin Lee & Company.

Billy Childish - Archive From 1959 ~ The Billy Childish Story (2009)

Rock | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 320 Mb

In an era when a band is considered unusually prolific if they release an album every 18 months, Billy Childish is a glorious anomaly, a man who believes in the power of music in its raw, pure state and isn't afraid to roll tape and capture the moment when the inspiration strikes. Childish's muse is a frequent enough visitor that he's released nearly 120 albums since his first band, the Pop Rivets, cut their debut LP in 1979, and what's more surprising than the fact he's made so many records is that most of them fall somewhere between pretty good and pretty great. In 1991, Sub Pop took up the daunting task of assembling a Billy Childish career anthology with the two-CD set I Am the Billy Childish, which pulled one track each from the 50 albums Childish had put out to date; since then, the man's body of work has continued to expand at a feverish pace, and Archive from 1959: The Billy Childish Story by necessity takes a different approach. Instead of summarizing the totality of Childish's catalog of recorded work, Archive from 1959 is an introduction to his rock & roll music, ignoring for the time being his dabblings in blues, folk, and spoken word. Archive from 1959 doesn't bother itself with a chronological sequence of Childish's recordings, as this set jumps between decades and the man's various groups (Thee Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Caesars, Thee Headcoats, Thee Buff Medways, the Musicians of the British Empire and still more), but his approach hasn't changed very much with the years -- Childish still bashes away at his cheap guitar like some unholy fusion of the Sonics, Link Wray, and the Who in their early amphetamine overdrive period, he still can throw down a furious rant as easily as a snarky pop culture homage or a fractured observation on the battle of the sexes, and he seems perfectly incapable of not pouring out one hundred percent of his heart and soul when he steps up to the microphone. The 51 songs on these two CDs hardly tell the full story about Childish and his music, but as a summary of what he does best, it's accurate, compelling, and it rocks hard -- this is garage rock that holds up a mirror to every corner of this man's soul, and there are a few dozen remarkable stories to be found on Archive from 1959, along with music powerful enough to awake the dead.

The Stanley Brothers & The Clinch Mountain Boys - The Complete Mercury Recordings (2003)

Country | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 282 Mb

Major label Universal, which controls the catalog of Mercury Records, has taken a welcome, if belated, interest in the recordings made for Mercury by the Stanley Brothers during their tenure there from 1953 to 1958, issuing a full-priced compilation, Angel Band: The Classic Mercury Recordings in 1995, and an entry in the midline-priced 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection series of artist best-ofs in 2002. Annotator Mary Katherine Aldin makes no bones about the reason for Universal's decision to plump for this two-disc set of the Stanley Brothers' complete Mercury recordings, mentioning the appearance of the track "Angel Band" on the multi-million-selling O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack in the opening paragraph of her liner notes. The success of that 2000 album has opened the reissue floodgates for more than one bluegrass act, and this is one of the happier results. The Stanley Brothers (with the varying personnel of their three-or four-piece backing group, the Clinch Mountain Boys), were still-young bluegrass veterans when they arrived at Mercury in 1953, guitarist Carter about to turn 28, and banjoist Ralph 26. Recording was not the primary element in their career; they managed only 46 tracks in 12 sessions in four-and-a-half years (the last two selections come from an undated session for Smash, a label acquired by Mercury). But that gave them time to come up with excellent original material; 37 of the songs here were written by one or both of the brothers. The cover songs include standards like "Orange Blossom Special" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky." The subject matter consisted mostly of songs of love gone wrong, with religious statements providing some relief from the romantic grief. The playing, fast or slow, is consistently impressive bluegrass picking on guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and bass, and Carter's lead vocals, with Ralph chiming in on high tenor, are the epitome of bluegrass singing. This is classic work of its type. (The collection includes four tracks previously unreleased in the U.S.)

Alvin Cash - Windy City Workout ~ The Essential Dance Craze Hits & Rarities 1967-73 (2012)

Soul, R&B | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 233 Mb

During the '60s, Alvin Cash was something of a staple in the Chicago soul scene, thanks to his grooving instrumental hit "Twine Time" -- a dance record produced by Andre Williams. He never quite capitalized on that single, despite it going all the way to 14 on the Billboard charts in 1965, but it wasn't for lack of trying. He kept recording throughout the '60s, racking up similarly bright, breezy, grooving sides like "The Barracuda," "The Philly Freeze," "Alvin's Boo-Ga-Loo," and "Keep On Dancing," but rarely getting heard outside of the Windy City and, then in the years afterward, he was relegated to hardcore cult status, partially because his music never saw reissue on CD. Charly's long-overdue 2012 compilation Windy City Workout finally rights that wrong, offering 39 sides Cash recorded for Mar-V-Lus, Toddlin' Town, Seventy-Seven, and Sound Stage Seven, including all of his lone LP, Twine Time, plus various rarities. The fidelity may be a little rough -- and not just by design from Williams on those early tracks, either -- but that's fine, considering the rarity of these tracks; plus it sounds fitting that these grooves are pumping away on an AM radio. Almost all of these tracks are about good-time vibes: they're dance songs, no matter which era they're from. As the '60s gave way to the '70s, Cash rode a couple of fads, contributing a popcorn single ("Poppin' Popcorn"), covering Wilson Pickett's "Funky Broadway," and stealing bits from James Brown. There are no knockouts here, but they're fun as soul artifacts, capturing a time, sound, and style that were only around for a few years, and it's nice to finally have these singles reissued so Alvin Cash can finally get his due as an appealing second-string Chicago soul singer.

The Only Ones - Darkness & Light ~ The Complete BBC Recordings (2002)

Rock | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 223 Mb

This two-CD set brings together all five of the band's 1977-1980 sessions for BBC radio, as well as a couple of late-'70s TV appearances on the BBC television show Old Grey Whistle Test (which are as good fidelity-wise as the radio broadcasts). Most of the material comes from their three albums, although there are a few items here and there that only showed up elsewhere in places like the Remains compilation or the Peel Sessions release. This concentration of multiple sessions over a short period of time does mean you get two versions of a few songs (including the celebrated "Another Girl Another Planet") and three of "The Beast," in fact, but they're intelligently widely spaced from each other. There aren't great hidden dimensions to be unveiled by these recordings that you wouldn't get from the studio releases, but they're solid and committed performances of quality early new wave material with a live ambience. Not that anyone suspected this, but they also serve as proof that the group were good live players, better and tighter than many bands of their ilk. If there was no other Only Ones music in print, this would on its own serve as a pretty good summation of their repertoire. As it happens, there will probably always be Only Ones studio recordings available, but even those who own them will find this to be a pretty enjoyable supplement. Additionally, the liner notes nicely condense the Only Ones' story, with plenty of interesting quotes from lead guitarist John Perry.

VA - Boogie Chillen ~ Early Mods' First-Choice Vinyl (2013)

Soul, Rhythm & Blues | Mp3 320 kbps | 3 CD | 472 Mb

The most enlightening and informative mod collection yet to see issue, Boogie Chillen not only provides a fascinating history lesson, but also delivers a compelling 3 ½ hours of great music.
At the start of the sixties, Britain bore witness to a new, brash youth movement, which up until the onset of hippy-dom later that decade, dominated the country’s fashion and musical landscape. These young modernists embraced a smart, stylish look along with the coolest sounds emanating from the US, and later, Jamaica. While the subculture eventually faded from British mainstream consciousness, it has never disappeared altogether, attracting new followers worldwide with each new generation.
Yet despite its enduring popularity, the music that inspired the original mod stylists has remained largely undocumented. Boogie Chillen sets to put the record straight, collecting 75 of the most popular and influential tracks on the burgeoning mod scene of the early sixties. Annotated and compiled by first generation mod, Rob Nicholls, the 3CD set takes a musical journey, highlighting an array of classic R&B, jazz and rock & roll classics that found favour among those considered Britain’s coolest youths.
Disc One features recordings from 1952 through to 1960, from the elemental electric blues of John Lee Hooker, Slim Harpo and Elmore James, to the jazz grooves of Cannonball Adderley, via the rock & roll of Link Wray and Dale Hawkins. There are R&B cuts of all shades, from the New Orleans sounds of Huey Smith and Frankie Ford to the polished sound of Lloyd Price. Discs Two and Three concentrates on the early 1960s, presenting sounds that were contemporaneous with the blossoming mod club scene. The net is cast wide to include James Brown, early Motown and Stax sides, the Latin jazz of Ray Barretto and the sophisticate vocals of Mel Torme. It’s this variety of styles that sets Boogie Chillen apart from other mod compilations: the early mod scene embraced all forms of popular music – from Neil Sedaka to Booker T & The MG’s – as long as it satisfied the discerning early mods’ taste for cool grooves and rocking rhythms.

Aretha Franklin - Amazing Grace ~ The Complete Recordings (1999)

R&B, Soul, Religious | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 364 Mb

Among Aretha aficionados, Amazing Grace has long been considered one of her high-water marks, since it captured her glorious return to her gospel roots in front of a live audience. The original 1972 album contained just 14 tracks, culled from two live performances with the Southern California Community Choir, Ken Lupper, and the Rev. James Cleveland at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Fans have long wished for the release of the two complete concerts -- which is exactly what Rhino's Amazing Grace: The Complete Recordings gives them. Over the course of two discs and 29 tracks, every performance Franklin gave that January, along with comments from Cleveland and solo tracks from Lupper and the Choir, is unfurled, and if anything, the music is even more impressive when heard complete and unedited. Of course, the nature of this set makes it of interest primarily to dedicated fans, but they'll likely be delighted by the entire package.
