Lulu - Shout! ~ The Complete Decca Recordings 1964-67 (2009)

Pop, Rock | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 243 Mb

Although Lulu's mid-'60s Decca recordings have been issued piecemeal on numerous anthologies, somehow no one executed the logical idea of putting them all together on one release until this 42-track, two-CD collection. All of her 1964-1967 sides for the label are included, serving as a comprehensive document to the first three years or so of her recording career. Particularly in the U.S. (where she really wasn't known until the 1967 chart-topper "To Sir with Love," not included here), this period has remained rather obscure, and certainly not as familiar to the general rock fan as her more commercially successful recordings of the late '60s. This is a shame, as this was undoubtedly the era -- in spite of her tender teenage years -- in which she laid down her most soulful, R&B-influenced, and raunchiest recordings by far. The 1964 British hit cover of "Shout!" is of course the most famous of these. But those who dismiss Lulu as a relative lightweight of the British Invasion might be surprised to find quite a few other first-rate combinations of soul and girl group pop here, like "Nothing Left to Do But Cry," "I'll Come Running Over," "After You," "Take Me as I Am," "Can't Hear You No More," and a rip-roaring "Heatwave." The completist nature of this project does mean you get a good number of mediocre songs that wouldn't have made the cut for a more selective single-disc Decca-era best-of. Too, some of the rarer numbers (including both sides of a German-language 45 and numerous non-LP tracks) just aren't in the same league with the more familiar tunes. But with comprehensive liner notes, this is a necessary acquisition for Lulu fans, and a pretty good one for more general British Invasion admirers.

Ten Years After - The Anthology 1967-1971 (2002)

Pop, Rock, Blues | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 367 Mb

Since Ten Years After's albums weren't stand-alone classics, this double CD of their prime years is the best bet for those who like the band but don't want to sit through some pretty mediocre and monotonous stuff to get to the best bits. The 26 cuts are pretty well chosen, including naturally their most famed songs: "I'm Going Home" (the live Woodstock version), "I'd Love to Change the World," and the British hit "Love Like a Man." Even as it draws from the cream of their work, it can't quite make the argument for them as a major band, but it does show that they were a more versatile act than many would remember. There are some reasonable pop- and folk-rock-flavored songs from the pen of Alvin Lee; a fair amount of jazz influence from time to time, as on "Me and My Baby" and "Woman Trouble"; a song ("50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain") that borrows rather too liberally from the Rolling Stones, "Sympathy for My Devil"; and even a bit of Grateful Dead-like vocal harmony on "Hear Me Calling." There's still, of course, quite a bit of blues-rock, flash guitar, and boogie, which sound better when broken up by more subdued and varied cuts and also benefit from the wise decision not to include too many covers. It's also nice that the collection includes both sides of two 1968 singles, although those were released on LP in the early '70s as part of Alvin Lee & Company.

CD 1, 1. I Want to Know (2:09), 2. I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes (5:22), 3. Spoonful (6:03), 4. Help Me (9:50), 5. Portable People (2:14), 6. The Sounds (4:11), 7. Rock Your Mama (2:59), 8. The Only Ones - Darkness & Light ~ The Complete BBC Recordings (2002)

Rock | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 223 Mb

This two-CD set brings together all five of the band's 1977-1980 sessions for BBC radio, as well as a couple of late-'70s TV appearances on the BBC television show Old Grey Whistle Test (which are as good fidelity-wise as the radio broadcasts). Most of the material comes from their three albums, although there are a few items here and there that only showed up elsewhere in places like the Remains compilation or the Peel Sessions release. This concentration of multiple sessions over a short period of time does mean you get two versions of a few songs (including the celebrated "Another Girl Another Planet") and three of "The Beast," in fact, but they're intelligently widely spaced from each other. There aren't great hidden dimensions to be unveiled by these recordings that you wouldn't get from the studio releases, but they're solid and committed performances of quality early new wave material with a live ambience. Not that anyone suspected this, but they also serve as proof that the group were good live players, better and tighter than many bands of their ilk. If there was no other Only Ones music in print, this would on its own serve as a pretty good summation of their repertoire. As it happens, there will probably always be Only Ones studio recordings available, but even those who own them will find this to be a pretty enjoyable supplement. Additionally, the liner notes nicely condense the Only Ones' story, with plenty of interesting quotes from lead guitarist John Perry.

CD 1, 1. Oh No (2:04), 2. Lovers Of Today (3:05), 3. Telescopic Love (2:46), 4. In Betweens (3:44), 5. Another Girl, Another Planet (2:57), 6. The Beast (5:36), 7. No Peace For The Wicked (2:34), 8. Aretha Franklin - Amazing Grace ~ The Complete Recordings (1999)

R&B, Soul, Religious | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 364 Mb

Among Aretha aficionados, Amazing Grace has long been considered one of her high-water marks, since it captured her glorious return to her gospel roots in front of a live audience. The original 1972 album contained just 14 tracks, culled from two live performances with the Southern California Community Choir, Ken Lupper, and the Rev. James Cleveland at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Fans have long wished for the release of the two complete concerts -- which is exactly what Rhino's Amazing Grace: The Complete Recordings gives them. Over the course of two discs and 29 tracks, every performance Franklin gave that January, along with comments from Cleveland and solo tracks from Lupper and the Choir, is unfurled, and if anything, the music is even more impressive when heard complete and unedited. Of course, the nature of this set makes it of interest primarily to dedicated fans, but they'll likely be delighted by the entire package.

Janis Joplin - Farewell Song (1982)

Pop, Rock | FLAC | 242 Mb

A ragtag collection of odds and ends, live and studio, from both the Big Brother and solo era. The best cuts are on the Janis box in different versions, but serious fans will find some interesting items here, especially the Cheap Thrills-era outtakes and live performances; "Misery 'N," "Farewell Song," and "Catch Me Daddy" were easily good enough to have qualified for inclusion on that album.

The Turtles - The Complete Original Album Collection (2016)

Pop, Rock | Mp3 320 kbps | 6 CD | 875 Mb

Judging from their radio hits, the Turtles were one of the best American pop bands of the '60s, crafting a series of engaging singles that were tuneful, witty, and fueled by a potent mix of Brill Building professionalism and knowing musical experimentation. But while one could certainly get a perspective on their genius through hits like "Happy Together," "Eleanor," "She's Rather Be with Me," and "You Baby," it was on their albums (and the B-sides of their 45s) where they let their imaginations run free and cut their wittiest and most ambitious material. The Complete Original Album Collection is just what the title suggests, a box set that includes the five albums the Turtles recorded during their original 1964 to 1970 run (1965's It Ain't Me Babe, 1966's You Baby/Let Me Be, 1967's Happy Together, 1968's The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands, and 1969's Turtle Soup), as well as 1970's Wooden Head, a set cobbled together from unreleased material that emerged just as the band and its label were flaming out. The first album is dominated by the band's early folk-rock influences (it includes four songs written by Bob Dylan, as well as P.F. Sloan's very Dylan-esque "Eve of Destruction"), while You Baby/Let Me Be and Happy Together find them celebrating their command of the pop single, as well as Al Nichol's superb guitar and keyboard work and the outstanding harmonies and songwriting of leaders Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan. The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands is the group's masterwork, a hilarious and remarkably accomplished set in which they impersonated a dozen different acts in just as many styles. And while Turtle Soup was recorded during a chaotic time for the Turtles, it's a mature and thoughtful album featuring some splendid songs and sympathetic production from Ray Davies of the Kinks. For this set, the first three Turtles albums are presented in both their stereo and mono mixes (the differences in the mixes are usually minimal, though obsessives will be glad they're both available), while the other discs feature the original albums along with a healthy serving of B-sides, rarities, demos, and alternate takes. For some people, this box set may be more Turtles than they want or need, and those folks are advised to either pick up the individual albums they favor, or get the concurrently released compilation All the Singles. But despite its bulk, The Complete Original Album Collection is a breezy and entertaining collection all the way through, and this music really does rank with the best, smartest, and wittiest pop music of the final half of the '60s. The Turtles were a unique band, and this set is joyous proof.

Annie Philippe - Sensationnel! ~ Yé-Yé Bonbons 1965-1968 (2015)

Beat, Chanson | Mp3 320 kbps | 134 Mb

The 2015 Annie Philippe compilation Sensationnel! Yé-Yé Bonbons 1965-1968 brings together a nice cross section of hits from the popular French vocalist at the height of her career. A European reworking of the American phrase "yeah! yeah!," yé-yé pop showcased young, cherubic-voiced female singers framed against dance-ready beats and rock & roll hooks in songs often riddled with thinly veiled sexual innuendo. It was bubblegum pop meets softcore porn and it was massively successful in Europe from the late '50s through the '60s. Along with singers like Sheila, Sylvie Vartan, Françoise Hardy, and France Gall, Philippe popularized the yé-yé sound and became one of the decade's poster girls for hip, mod-friendly Euro style and pop culture. While the vocalists themselves were certainly the focus of public interest in yé-yé, the success of the yé-yé sound was due, at least in part, to the behind-the-scenes talent and technical expertise involved in the production and songwriting. Philippe alone worked with a bevy of gifted lyricists and arrangers, including such luminaries as Gilles Thibaut, Jacques Revaux, Paul Mauriat, Jean-Claude Vannier, and Christian Gaubert. Furthermore, no amount of money was spared in a song's production, and subsequently many of Philippe's cuts, including tracks like "C'est la Mode," "Plus Rien," and "Une Petite Croix," are lush productions replete with orchestral flourishes, ripe horn parts, vibrant backing vocals, and, as always, the fertile guitar buzz of an electric rock quartet underpinning it all. Though the popularity of yé-yé began to fizzle by the 1970s, and Philippe scored her final hit in 1967, the genre -- and Philippe's career for that matter -- lived on in the guise of such post-yé-yé movements as '70s disco and '80s new wave.

1. C'est La Mode (2:37), 2. Plus Rien (2:19), 3. Pour La Gloire (2:03), 4. Pas De Taxi (EP Version) (2:14), 5. On M'a Toujours Dit (2:18), 6. Barbara & The Browns - Can't Find Happiness (2007)

Soul, R&B | FLAC | 290 Mb

From the mid-'60s through the early '70s, Barbara & the Browns issued a few singles on various labels without making a significant commercial breakthrough, though their 1964 Stax 45 "Big Party" tickled the very bottom of the Top 100. Neither that nor their other two Stax singles are on this compilation, but it does have two tracks they subsequently recorded for other labels (including Atco, Cadet, Sounds of Memphis, and Tower), eight of them previously unreleased. How does it rate against the other soul pouring out of Memphis during this very fertile period? Well, it's decent, but you can hear why they didn't go any further than they did. Lead singer Barbara Brown was strong-voiced, and the material was average to good. But there was only room for so many other performers once more talented heavyweights like the Staple Singers, Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, and non-Memphis singers purveying gospel-grounded soul like Aretha Franklin had grabbed their shares of the audience. Some of these songs are really good, especially the sadder and more serious ones that use some unexpectedly dramatic and creative melodies and chord progressions, like "It Hurts Me So Much (To Be Able to Look and to Know I Can't Touch)" (a previously unissued song issued here in two different versions) and the 1968 single "Can't Find No Happiness." Those cuts would find a good home on a best-of-non-hit-'60s Memphis soul box set, if anyone ever compiles such a thing; their yearning, arching passion and willingness to insert popcraft into deep soul tunes are reminders of what made the best Memphis soul so special. Other tracks, though, are just ordinary period fare, and rather forgettable, making you feel that Barbara & the Browns (who certainly were better at stern ballads than more amiable uptempo numbers) never made the album's worth of solid material of which they seemed capable. The best of the songs here -- and "If I Can't Run to You I'll Crawl" and "I Don't Want to Have to Wait" are almost as good as the aforementioned highlights -- are still good enough to make the CD worthwhile for '60s deep soul specialists, but others might find it too much to sift through for the special moments.

1. Can't Find No Happiness (2:17), 2. It Hurts Me So Much (To Be Able To Look And To Know I Can't Touch) (2:22), 3. If I Can't Run To You I'll Crawl (2:40), 4. I Don't Want To Have To Wait (2:47), 5. Nat King Cole - The Very Best Of Nat King Cole (2006)

Vocal Jazz | Mp3 320 kbps | 187 Mb

This generous anthology, with 28 tracks and close to 80 minutes of music, is one of the best single-disc sets on the market of Nat King Cole's pop side. Spanning over 20 years, from 1943 to 1964, The Very Best of Nat King Cole includes most of his biggest hits for Capitol Records, like 1946's "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66," 1950s "Mona Lisa," 1951's "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" and "Unforgettable," and 1956's "When I Fall in Love" (with its wonderful orchestration arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins), although there are some intriguing omissions (1962's "Ramblin' Rose," for instance, isn't included here), but it's hard to quibble; after all, Cole charted over 100 pop singles during his career and nothing short of a massive box set could feature them all. What's most striking is how uniform everything is, as if it was all drawn from one long recording session, and Cole's rich, warm voice and perfect enunciation never falters. He was criticized for leaving his jazz roots for pop stardom, but it is worth noting how jazz-based and stripped-down most of these sides actually are, and even when orchestration is present, it is never intrusive or overwhelming, and the focus is always on Cole's steady, calm and measured vocals. It all adds up to a near-perfect introduction to Cole's Capitol years.

1. Stardust (3:14), 2. Sweet Lorraine (3:07), 3. (Get Your Kicks On) Route 66 (2:59), 4. Straighten Up and Fly Right (2:24), 5. (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons (2:50), 6. What'll I Do? Though collection covers the latter years of a band whose hit-single heyday had been in the previous decade, the '80s for Slade proved to be a true renaissance and a rockin' rebirth. It all started at the 1980 Reading Festival when a field full of Heavy Metal fans were treated to a Slade performance of such power and professionalism, the band were re-embraced by the audience as credible Hard Rock heroes. Thereafter it was hit singles, sold-out tours and a lucrative new record deal which yielded seven more years of Slade music. Here we present 33 tracks from a group who, while updating themselves for the new decade, also maintained the essential qualities that made Slade a unique British Pop/Rock band and a national treasure.

Otis Redding - The King Of Soul (2014)

Soul | Mp3 320 kbps | 4 CD | 648 Mb

Although his recording career only lasted five years, from 1962 through 1967 (seven studio albums in all), with his biggest hits coming in the last two years of that time, and his only number one, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," after his death, Otis Redding is still widely considered the greatest performer of the classic soul era, a designation he undoubtedly deserves. A dynamic performer and a more than competent songwriter ("Dock of the Bay," for instance, is a Redding original), he brought the energy and directness of gospel into the secular world with a fervor and passion that made his songs, and particularly his live versions of them, into gritty sermons on the joy, loss, pain, and yearning that attends being in love. It helped, too, that his backing outfit on most of his tracks was the great Stax Records house band the MG's, who knew how to punch in and stomp it and also when to lay back in a quiet storm behind him, and the band and Redding together were an unstoppable force. There have been plenty of Redding compilations over the years, with this one, The King of Soul, being yet another one, but it is distinctive for its breadth, tracking the arc of Redding's career through 92 tracks arranged chronologically over four discs, and because it also, particularly when covering the early years, includes mono mixes, which often carried more tightly focused punch than the stereo ones. Appearing during the 50th anniversary year of the release of Redding's debut album, Pain in My Heart, this set tells the story of the King of Soul as well as any other compilation out there. Everything essential is here, and with Otis Redding, it's pretty much all essential. He was that kind of artist.

VA - Love Hit Me! ~ Decca Beat Girls 1962-1970 (2016)

Pop, Beat Girls | Mp3 320 kbps | 185 Mb

Once the British pop boom took hold in the wake of the Beatles in 1962, Decca compensated for their Fab fumble by signing a lot of acts, including a bunch of female singers. Ace's 2016 compilation Love Hit Me! Decca Beat Girls 1962-1970 chronicles a lot of these signings, including such stars as Lulu, Marianne Faithfull, and Twinkle (the latter's "Golden Lights," later covered by the Smiths, is featured here), but the fun of the collection is how it rounds up singers who didn't enter the history books even if they happened to have hits at the time. There are some sonic constants -- big beats, blasts of brass, swirls of strings, tambourines out of Tamla, fuzz guitars, a transatlantic dilution of the Wall of Sound that remains potent -- so this holds together, but what's fun is digging out particular favorites. Beverley's "Where the Good Times Are" contains an insistent blissed-out R&B rush, the Orchids bring the Ronettes to Britain for "Love Hit Me," the Vernons Girls' "Dat's Love" is a bizarre sendup, and Sandra Barry & the Boys' "Really Gonna Shake" is an absolute raver, a single that's worth the price of admission. Other songs provide a similar kind of buzz, and the reason why Love Hit Me! is worth a listen is how the whole package provides a vivid flashback anchored by enduring pop 45s.
