The Only Ones - Darkness & Light ~ The Complete BBC Recordings (2002)

Rock | Mp3 320 kbps | 2 CD | 223 Mb

This two-CD set brings together all five of the band's 1977-1980 sessions for BBC radio, as well as a couple of late-'70s TV appearances on the BBC television show Old Grey Whistle Test (which are as good fidelity-wise as the radio broadcasts). Most of the material comes from their three albums, although there are a few items here and there that only showed up elsewhere in places like the Remains compilation or the Peel Sessions release. This concentration of multiple sessions over a short period of time does mean you get two versions of a few songs (including the celebrated "Another Girl Another Planet") and three of "The Beast," in fact, but they're intelligently widely spaced from each other. There aren't great hidden dimensions to be unveiled by these recordings that you wouldn't get from the studio releases, but they're solid and committed performances of quality early new wave material with a live ambience. Not that anyone suspected this, but they also serve as proof that the group were good live players, better and tighter than many bands of their ilk. If there was no other Only Ones music in print, this would on its own serve as a pretty good summation of their repertoire. As it happens, there will probably always be Only Ones studio recordings available, but even those who own them will find this to be a pretty enjoyable supplement. Additionally, the liner notes nicely condense the Only Ones' story, with plenty of interesting quotes from lead guitarist John Perry.

Janis Joplin - Farewell Song (1982)

Pop, Rock | FLAC | 242 Mb

A ragtag collection of odds and ends, live and studio, from both the Big Brother and solo era. The best cuts are on the Janis box in different versions, but serious fans will find some interesting items here, especially the Cheap Thrills-era outtakes and live performances; "Misery 'N," "Farewell Song," and "Catch Me Daddy" were easily good enough to have qualified for inclusion on that album.

Barbara & The Browns - Can't Find Happiness (2007)

Soul, R&B | FLAC | 290 Mb

From the mid-'60s through the early '70s, Barbara & the Browns issued a few singles on various labels without making a significant commercial breakthrough, though their 1964 Stax 45 "Big Party" tickled the very bottom of the Top 100. Neither that nor their other two Stax singles are on this compilation, but it does have two tracks they subsequently recorded for other labels (including Atco, Cadet, Sounds of Memphis, and Tower), eight of them previously unreleased. How does it rate against the other soul pouring out of Memphis during this very fertile period? Well, it's decent, but you can hear why they didn't go any further than they did. Lead singer Barbara Brown was strong-voiced, and the material was average to good. But there was only room for so many other performers once more talented heavyweights like the Staple Singers, Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, and non-Memphis singers purveying gospel-grounded soul like Aretha Franklin had grabbed their shares of the audience. Some of these songs are really good, especially the sadder and more serious ones that use some unexpectedly dramatic and creative melodies and chord progressions, like "It Hurts Me So Much (To Be Able to Look and to Know I Can't Touch)" (a previously unissued song issued here in two different versions) and the 1968 single "Can't Find No Happiness." Those cuts would find a good home on a best-of-non-hit-'60s Memphis soul box set, if anyone ever compiles such a thing; their yearning, arching passion and willingness to insert popcraft into deep soul tunes are reminders of what made the best Memphis soul so special. Other tracks, though, are just ordinary period fare, and rather forgettable, making you feel that Barbara & the Browns (who certainly were better at stern ballads than more amiable uptempo numbers) never made the album's worth of solid material of which they seemed capable. The best of the songs here -- and "If I Can't Run to You I'll Crawl" and "I Don't Want to Have to Wait" are almost as good as the aforementioned highlights -- are still good enough to make the CD worthwhile for '60s deep soul specialists, but others might find it too much to sift through for the special moments.

1. Can't Find No Happiness (2:17), 2. It Hurts Me So Much (To Be Able To Look And To Know I Can't Touch) (2:22), 3. If I Can't Run To You I'll Crawl (2:40), 4. I Don't Want To Have To Wait (2:47), 5. Pity A Fool (2:52), 6. Big Party (2:42), 7. Plenty Of Room (2:28), 8. I'm Gonna Start A War (2:23), 9. You Don't Love Me (2:37), 10. Watch Dog (2:22), 11. Man Around The House (2:51), 12. It all started at the 1980 Reading Festival when a field full of Heavy Metal fans were treated to a Slade performance of such power and professionalism, the band were re-embraced by the audience as credible Hard Rock heroes. Otis Redding - The King Of Soul (2014)

Soul | Mp3 320 kbps | 4 CD | 648 Mb

Although his recording career only lasted five years, from 1962 through 1967 (seven studio albums in all), with his biggest hits coming in the last two years of that time, and his only number one, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," after his death, Otis Redding is still widely considered the greatest performer of the classic soul era, a designation he undoubtedly deserves. A dynamic performer and a more than competent songwriter ("Dock of the Bay," for instance, is a Redding original), he brought the energy and directness of gospel into the secular world with a fervor and passion that made his songs, and particularly his live versions of them, into gritty sermons on the joy, loss, pain, and yearning that attends being in love. It helped, too, that his backing outfit on most of his tracks was the great Stax Records house band the MG's, who knew how to punch in and stomp it and also when to lay back in a quiet storm behind him, and the band and Redding together were an unstoppable force. There have been plenty of Redding compilations over the years, with this one, The King of Soul, being yet another one, but it is distinctive for its breadth, tracking the arc of Redding's career through 92 tracks arranged chronologically over four discs, and because it also, particularly when covering the early years, includes mono mixes, which often carried more tightly focused punch than the stereo ones. Appearing during the 50th anniversary year of the release of Redding's debut album, Pain in My Heart, this set tells the story of the King of Soul as well as any other compilation out there. Everything essential is here, and with Otis Redding, it's pretty much all essential. He was that kind of artist.
