This is a tremendously important LP from late 1964 that is frequently overlooked. The English band that had a giant hit with "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" was really a blues adn R&B band with jazzy leanings. Check out "Sack O'Woe," track #3. No other British Invasion band was covering Cannonball Adderley the year Beatlemania struck. Plus songs from Ike & Tina, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley (track 11 was a huuuuge influence on my teenage white-bread sensibility), oh and Ray Charles in the expanded edition. Their own tunes, meanwhile, were uniformly hipper than their big hits, Do Wah Diddy and Sha La La. They would almost have to be. Anyway, pretty hip for 1964, check it out!
